LONG BEACH (CNS) - The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control announced Monday that more than 100 confiscated animals had been cleared for adoption after an illegal animal facility in Compton was investigated for neglect.
"DACC obtained the warrants based on multiple complaints of neglect and mistreatment from members of the community about this organization," DACC spokesman Don Belton said in a statement. "After investigating, warrants were issued due to the animal rescue organization's noncompliance with State and County animal care laws."
The DACC Major Case Unit partnered with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Bureau of Investigation to execute three search warrants on Jan. 3 at Compton Animal Rescue, where 143 live animals -- primarily dogs but also cats, turtles, a tortoise, a rooster, chickens, a pig, snakes, a horse, a hamster, rabbits, a hawk, and several lizards -- were seized. An additional 13 animals were found dead on the premises.
Belton said all animals seized were distributed among DACC's animal care centers, where they underwent medical evaluation and treatment.
The animal clearance allows them to embark on new beginnings in homes and rescue facilities and avoid a lengthy stay at the care centers, the department said.
"DACC will always act when the health and safety of animals is at risk," DACC Director Marcia Mayeda said. "Now that these animals have received the care and treatment they desperately needed, we are hopeful they will be placed swiftly in the loving homes they deserve."
