Combine multiple airlines. Of course a direct flight is easiest but it is not the cheapest. If you are not in a rush to get to your destination try combining airlines.
See two destinations in one trip. Why stay stuck at the airport when you can get out and take in some attractions? Of course make sure it's a fun city
Wait for the right moment. Timing is everything. If you know for a fact you are going to a wedding or seeing family for the holidays, start looking (and possibly booking) now.
If you can build in some flexibility to your travel but adding a day or two that may also help you get the cheaper flight.
