Doctors Remove 15-Pound Hairball from Teen's Stomach

General Election - National Health Service

After a 17-year-old girl in India complained of severe stomach pains, doctors took x-rays and promptly discovered its source: the girl had a 15-pound ball of hair in her stomach.

The teen -- identified as Sweety Kumari -- was suffering from an ailment known as Rapunzel's Syndrome -- a rare disorder that results in its victims eating their own hair. Because hair isn't easily digested, it builds up in the victim's stomach and causes nausea, bloating, stomach pain, and vomiting, doctors say.

In Kumari's case, the 15-pound hairball -- which is more than twice the weight of a typical newborn -- was the result of "several years" of hair eating, doctors say. It took surgeons six hours to remove the giant wad from her stomach, but she's expected to make a full recovery.
