Nutritionist Elissa Goodman is a fan of monolaurin, a lauric acid that is a strong antiviral derived from coconuts. Goodman says taking at the first sign of illness is best along with upping vitamin C.

Some say Chinese mushrooms like Reishi and Chaga support the immune system.

The basics of immunity include staying hydrated, increasing vitamin C foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots, orange tomatoes, cantaloupe and leafy greens.

Olive oil and seeds provide vitamin E and studies show chicken soup thin mucous membranes, rehydrate and replenish nutrients.

Be sure to include plenty of herbs in your soup like basil, thyme, rosemary, and sage.
