How To Avoid Catching Coronavirus On An Airplane

With fears over coronavirus, some people are wondering how they can avoid it while on an airplane.

David Powell is a medical advisor for the International Air Transport Association.

He told CNBC some tips on how to best protect yourself from getting sick.

Powell said hand hygiene is key.

Since there are many shared surfaces, avoid touching your face, wash your hands and use a good hand sanitizer.

He also said the risk of catching it from the air is pretty low because airplanes have great filtration systems.

The virus can be spread by close contact with someone who might sneeze or cough on you. Powell also says that face masks are "ineffective protection" and only should be worn by sick people.
