An apparent attempt to be relatable to her students has backfired on a Florida teacher, who may face disciplinary action for writing "WTF" on a teen's homework assignment.
Melinda Smith, the mother of the Rutherford High School student who received the comment, says she was offended when she saw what the teacher had written across the top of her son's science paper: "WTF is this? Absolutely no credit!"
Smith says, "It wasn’t anything about not getting the credit; it was more so the language, about what they’re writing to a student. That was very inappropriate and not acceptable for a teacher whatsoever."
Smith notified the school's principal, Coy Pilson, who says he's waiting to hear back from the school district before taking action. Regardless of the outcome, he wants to make it clear that the unnamed teacher's behavior is not representative of the rest of the staff. "All of the teachers at Rutherford High School are caring, loving teachers," he says. "We're also human and so we make mistakes ... and when we make mistakes, we try to correct those mistakes and move forward."
