Common Opens Up and Reveals He Was Molested As A Child!

Common The Let Love Collection Launch And Book Signing At Bloomingdale's 59th Street's Studio 59

Common has released his Memoir "Let Love Have The Last Word" and part of his Memoir reveals that when he was about 9 or 10 a relative of his GodMother molested him!

In the book he goes into detail about what happened

What's crazy is that Common had suppressed the memories and they didn't come to light until he was working on a scene with actress Laura Dern

“One day, while talking through the script with Laura, old memories surprisingly flashed in my mind,” - “I caught my breath and just kept looping the memories over and over, like rewinding an old VHS tape…I said ‘Laura, I think I was abused.'”

Then he goes on to say

“I was excited for a road trip I was about to take with my family. My mother; my godmother, Barbara; her son and my god brother Skeet; and his relative, who I’ll call Brandon…”

He says that he and Brandon were told to share a bed.

“At some point I felt Brandon’s hand on me,” he writes. “I pushed him away. I don’t remember saying a whole lot besides ‘No, no, no.'"

Sadly his abuser didn't stop

“He kept saying ‘It’s okay, It’s okay,’ as he pulled down my shorts and molested me. After he stopped he kept asking me to perform it on him. I kept repeating ‘No’ and pushing him away,” the rapper writes. “I felt a deep and sudden shame for what happened.”

Common explains that he pushed the memories out of his mind!

“Maybe it’s a matter of survival—Even now, two years after that flash resurgence of memories, as I’m writing, I’m still working through all of this in myself and with my therapist.”

I think it's really brave of Common to come out and share his experience, hopefully it helps a lot of people and proves once again, if you're a victim of abuse, it was not your fault!
