California Proposing to Pay All Past-Due Rent Accumulated During Pandemic

Many people were hit hard due to the Coronavirus pandemic and are still struggling to catch up on bills, including rent.

So California Lawmakers are working on finalizing legislation that would pay 100% of overdue rent for eligible tenants.

Because the state eviction protections are expiring this month, lawmakers are looking to push this $5.2 billion rent relief program that is backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The current rent relief program promises to pay off 80% of past-due rent for eligible tenants, but would be revised to pay off 100% of overdue rent, according to Russ Heimerich, a spokesperson for the state's Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency.
