A new coronavirus variant has been found and sent a chill through much of the world today as nations raced to halt air travel, markets fell sharply and scientists held emergency meetings to figure out the exact risks, which are very unknown.

A World Health Organization panel named the variant “omicron” and said that it's a highly transmissible virus of concern, the same category that includes the delta variant, the world’s most widespread. The panel said early evidence shows a high increased risk of reinfection.

The United States joined the European Union and a few other countries in putting travel restrictions on visitors from southern Africa.
