A landlord in New York City is being accused of cleaning out his tenant’s apartment while he was battling COVID-19 in the hospital.
According to Gothamist, when Ryo Nagaoka returned to his apartment earlier this week, he discovered several things missing. One of them being his piano and pet tortoise. Apparently during Nagaoka's hospitalization, the landlord changed the locks to his apartment and removed all of his belongings.
The landlord's attorney, Dan Shapiro told Gothamist that his client made “every effort to locate the resident," and also called local hospitals to locate him.
Nagaoka's neighbor, Sierra Zamarripa said “they thought he died." "He came back last night and there were padlocks on the door," she added.
Nagaoka is now looking for a lawyer who can help him during this scary process and hopes to keep his home and seek for the damage done.
His neighbor Sierra also started a GoFundMe page to help him as well.
