On Friday (August 25), a photo went viral in which it appeared a Best Buy store in Houston was selling water for an insane price of 12-packs of Smartwater for $29.98 and 24-packs of Dasani for a whopping $42.96, all amidst the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
This is a practice called "price-gouging."
Best Buy has released a statement apologizing for the crazy price hike, saying "This was a big mistake on the part of a few employees at one store on Friday. As a company we are focused on helping, not hurting affected people. We’re sorry and it won’t happen again."
Sources also say that the store doesn't normally sell water, so the employees mistakenly tried to price the packs based on individual bottle prices.
