Jay-Z’s Mom: ‘I Was Not Free’ Until I Told Son I Was Gay

JAY-Z’s mom recently spoke at the GLAAD Media Awards, Gloria Carter received special recognition for her contribution to JAY-Z’s song from his 4:44 album, "Smile."

"Smile became a reality because I shared with my son who I am," said Carter. "I chose to protect my family from ignorance. I was happy but I was not free."

JAY-Z recently spoke about the day his mother opened up about loving her partner, telling David Letterman during a Netflix special, "For her to sit in front of me and tell me, 'I think I love someone'. I mean, I really cried.”
