Mexico’s actual independence day is a national holiday celebrated on Sept. 16th.
In the 60’s a lot of Mexican-Americans celebrated May 5th as a source of pride in their civil rights fight and liquor companies tagged along for the ride making Cinco De Mayo one of the biggest holidays for alcohol sales.
