Definitely a disappointing day in the world of the Internet.
AOL made the announcement early this morning that the classic instant messenger will be coming to an end December 15th this year. AOL's Instant Messenger made it's debut back in 1997 on the website and later ventured off as a separate app in early 2000's due to it's popularity.
According to Engadget, it has not been revealed what exactly will be replacing AIM but coming but by the looks of things Yahoo Messenger might just take its place since Yahoo and AOL are both owned by Oath now.
Oath's VP of communications, Michael Albers states
"AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed. We are more excited than ever to continue building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world."
Let's just hope their next "iconic brand and life changing product" is just as great as AIM was.
Thank you AIM for a great time !
