Unidentified Objects Over Kansas City Leave Officials With 'No Explanation'

The residents of Kansas City, Missouri were tweeting up a storm last night after some unidentified objects came into view above the area. Hundreds of people witnessed two strange orbs floating high up in the sky. Many reached out to local affiliate KMBC 9, which began tweeting out photos that viewers submitted. The station wrote, "We've taken several calls in our newsroom about these two orbs spotted in the Kansas City sky tonight." Since often times, these UFOs turn out to just be weather balloons, KMBC tagged the KC National Weather Service in it, but that's when things got even weirder.

Rather than responding by giving a rational, scientific explanation for the bizarre objects, the Weather Service instead replied by writing, "We honestly have no explanation for the floating objects over Kansas City."

This made more and more viewers certain that an alien invasion was about to begin. KMBC first joked with their audience about it, tweeting out a fun poll that asked people what would be more intriguing to aliens - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes or some Kansas City barbecue. Mahomes won.

Then, the station started to seriously cover the objects. Reporter William Joy dug a little further into possible reasons for them and was able to get in touch with someone from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, who let him know that given the position, the UFOs are likely their balloons in test flight. DARPA, whose mission is to create innovative technology for national security, tweeted earlier this week that it had launched three balloons from Maryland as part of their Adaptable Lighter Than Air program.

According to the DARPA website:

"The goal of the Adaptable Lighter Than Air (ALTA) program is to develop and demonstrate a high altitude lighter-than-air vehicle capable of wind-borne navigation over extended ranges. The balloons can fly at altitudes of more than 75,000 feet. While they do not have independent propulsion, the ALTA vehicle is designed to navigate by changing altitude and thus taking advantage of different wind profiles aloft. A state-of-the-art Winds Aloft Sensor (WAS) is also being developed on the program, which is intended to provide real time stratospheric wind measurements."

Looks like KC is safe from aliens for now.
