House Passes Bill To Decriminalize Weed

The bill passed in a 228-164 vote, removes weed from the Controlled Substances Act, handing over its legality to states.

The legislation also calls for expunging criminal records of convicted pot violators and sets a 5 percent federal tax on cannabis products.

However, Friday's vote was mostly along party lines, with Democrats approving the legislation and Republicans opposing it.

For this reason, the bill isn't expected to clear the Republican-controlled Senate, says Representative Matt Gaetz, who co-sponsored the proposed law.
