APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — A homicide suspect was killed during a shootout with sheriff's deputies near an Apple Valley recycling center, in a confrontation that was recorded by shocked bystanders.

The Victorville Daily Press reports the suspect opened fire on Los Angeles County deputies who had spotted him driving a black Nissan Titan on Wednesday.

San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Bachman says deputies fired back and the man was shot dead at the scene. She says a female LA County deputy was treated for minor injuries.

Apple Valley resident Chris Miller tells the newspaper he and his family were stopped in their vehicle when the gunfire erupted.

Miller recorded the scene on video and his family's panicked voices can be heard along with dozens of shots.

Miller says he could see bullets ricocheting through the desert.
